1987 - Llanfair, North Wales
I used to live in Rural North Wales in a small village called Llanfair
Talhaiarn (try saying that when you've had a few beers!). A few years ago,
my cousin and I used to look out for satellites, as the sky is very clear,
with no obstruction from haze as caused by city lights. As you know,
satellites just appear as moving 'stars' in the heavens, so when something
out of the ordinary passes by, you take a little more interest.
One night, we saw six red lights bunched together in a triangle, as if a
smaller version of balls set up in a snooker triangle (if you know what I
mean.) We watched it pass, silent, fast, and about 300ft high. We told our
parents, but were given the usual 'it's a plane' stuff, and thought no more
of it.
In the local paper a few days later, some guy in Rhyl had seen a similar
object, and a phone number was given for the local ufologist, who
coincidentally happened to live in the next village, Llangernyw. Anyway, we
phoned her (I forget her name now), and explained what we'd seen. She said
that the area was a hot spot for ufos, and she showed me a big wad of
reports which she'd taken locally from people, some showing things similar
to what I'd seen.
Anyway, she left, and we went out every night for the next couple of weeks,
keeping an eye out for this thing. To say we saw it often was an
understatement. We saw it pass over, at varying levels almost twice a
night. And we weren't the only ones. A couple of council workers saw a
triangular object hovering over the river at around 6am during the week.
The same object passed over a freind's car very low. He noticed it because
he was very proud of a Ford Cortina he used to own, and polished it almost
every day, and was rather alarmed when he saw the reflection of something
very low in the sheen of his bonnet, which caused him to look up, and see
the said triangular object about 20ft above his car.
Almost everytime we saw it, it was usually about ten minutes before a few
jets would coincidentally follow the object's direction.
One particular evening, we were sitting on the bridge in the village, and
the object, about 300ft up again, started circling the village in a wide
arc. About a quarter of the way round, another smaller object, similar to
the other one joined it, and completed the rest of the circle, completely
parallel to it. This smaller object had 3 white lights, arranged in a
triangle. Again, both were silent, and followed by fighter aircraft about
ten minutes later. One of the planes were so low, that it had to pull up
steeply to avoid the mountain nearby (I remember this because I thought it
was going to crash, and I could see the flame out of the back of the jet.)
After about three weeks, the sightings died down.
However, one day, my Dad tried to get to Llangernyw, and said that the road
had been closed due to flooding. On the same day, we saw a few army
helicopters dropping what looked like flour into the river and surrounding
countryside. We thought that it was an army excercise. However, a few
years later, a friend of mine pointed out a paragraph in his book "UFOs and
how to spot them" by (I think) Jenny Randell, which says that the village of
Llangernyw was sealed off by the military as something had been spotted
landing next to the river. It seemed to tie up with the time of the sightings.
I've always been interested in UFOs, since seeing one when I was young. As
the area I used to live in is rural, and usually clear at night, views of
the night sky are unrestricted. My uncle used to live on a high point above
the village, and once saw (around 1979) an object he described as being "not
far off a mile long" floating past in the night sky. He said it almost
looked like a ship towing two smaller ones behind it, and within a split
second, it had disappeared. Two policemen in the town of Llanrwst saw a
similar object the same night.
I think that this area is very important as far as UFOs are concerned. It
seems a bit of a coincidence that there's so many sightings around there,
and a ufologist lives in the same area.
Just outside Llanrwst there's a field which has a small 'hill' in it which
is obviously man-made (rather flat on the top, then slopes down at an
angle.) Years ago, this field used to have "Government - Keep out signs"
around it, but these went around '84. I know some lads from the local
Venture Scout group (who were camping in Betws-y-Coed at the time) went on
there with a metal detector, and promptly got thrown out by some men "who
just came from nowhere".
Around 1983, my Dad came home late from work one night, and saw some bright
lights at the end of the field our house was next to. He said the outline
looked like a large caravan, but realised it was something different. He
rode down to the house (he was on a motorbike) in such a hurry he missed out
the track and came straight down the field. He woke my Mum up, and they
both went up to the field, but the object had gone. In the morning we all
went up, and found markings in the grass, where the grass was noticably
darker, but showed a distict pattern, like an elongated oval, dissected with
"legs" at four intervals, and a spot in the middle.
When I was interviewd by the ufologist, she actually told me that the
militarry had an underground base in Snowdonia National park, of which
Llanrwst is part. If you're interested, it may be worth trying to find out
more about this area. So many people have seen things; but the majority of
the people round there are a bit naive, and likely to dismiss anything out
of the unusual as "just one of those things". Simple farming folk, to coin
a bit of a derogitary term.
I'm not some nut who's just got carried away with the X-files or anything
like that, but it's nice to share a few experiences with someone who may
understand them.
